What? Sunset Rubdown

Sunset Rubdown are the side project of the mercurial Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade fame. With two albums already in the bag there’s no shortage of quality material. Their songs are all built around the imagery conjured up by Spencer’s bizarre, ethereal, lyrics about snakes, spirits and magic. The sound is a big one littered with guitars, pianos, accordion, whistles, claps and horns and Spencer’s wonderfully unique voice. Don’t miss this rare UK date.

Handsome Furs, 93 Feet East, April 8th

What? Handsome Furs

The band is husband/wife duo Dan Boeckner, from big favourites of mine Wolf Parade, and short story writer Alexei Perry. They make sometimes epic sometimes understated songs based around Dan’s instantly familiar voice and Alexei’s wordplay with some warm fuzzy guitars, keys and a drum machine to carry them along. For those who know Dan’s other band Handsome Furs will sound like a long lost friend while to others, after a while, you may wonder how you did without them. The below mp3 is taken from their forthcoming second album ‘Face Control’ which is released on 9th February, order it here.

When? Wednesday April 8th

Wolf Parade, Electric Ballroom, 1st Dec

Posted in Gigs, Tickets with tags , , , on November 27, 2008 by musicmuleblog

Yes yes yes! It’s almost time for the mighty Wolf Parade to grace our shores once again. I’ve been waiting ages for this one in case you didn’t guess. Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug found time between side projects (Handsome Furs and Sunset Rubdown respectively) to release a follow up album to 2005’s awesome Apologies To Queen Mary. Their new release At Mount Zoomer didn’t disappoint although definitely didn’t have as many standout tracks as its predecessor.  I wouldn’t miss this for the world.
