mp3: The Temper Trap – Science Of Fear

The Temper Trap were the best band I saw yesterday amongst some stiff competition. From Melbourne these guys play big rock songs that could equally fit in an arena (I’m thinking more Brixton Academy than Wembley but who knows) or in a smaller art rock venue. Lots of guitars (three at some points) pounding drums and a frontman (Dougy) with a great voice and a great presence. He looks nothing like what I imagined but that’s a good thing I think. I didn’t really get the TV On The Radio comparisons before seeing them live but they’ve got the same vibe. I love TVOTR and now I love The Temper Trap. I feel very privileged to have seen ‘Sweet Disposition’ played live. Happy days!

For Fans Of: TV On The Radio, The Rapture, good U2.

What? The Temper Trap + It Hugs Back + Threatmantics

The Temper Trap along and fellow Ozzies Empire Of The Sun mean that Downunder has an unusually big claim to some of the most exciting bands around this year. Not as dancey or seemingly eccentric as Empire of the Sun but their rock music sounds like it could be just as epic in its proportions. Big guitar hooks, big vocals. A great opportunity to catch this band before anyone else does. If you haven’t heard the previous On Repeat track ‘Sweet Disposition’ then why not?! It’s below again just in case you missed it.
For Fans of: TV On The Radio, (early) U2, Radiohead.

First support comes from It Hugs Back who play ‘swooning dream-pop full of joyous indie-rock delight and delicate shoegazing melancholia’. I’ve seen them live and that’s not far off. Melodic head nodding delight with laid back vocals.
For Fans of: Sonic Youth.

Second support comes from favourites of Huw Stephens and fellow Welshies, the freak folk rock band, Threatmantics.
For fans of: Super Furry Animals, The Coral, Crack.

When? Thursday, March 12th.

Where? The Lexington, Islington.

How Much? £6

Melbourne’s The Temper Trap are set to put Ozzie music firmly on the map this year. I featured them in ‘On Repeat’ recently. This is a really early chance to grab a peak.
For Fans of: TV On The Radio, Radiohead and early U2 apparently.

On Repeat: The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition

This song is epic. What a great guitar line and the guy’s voice is amazing. He’s called Dougy by the way. I don’t know a lot else at this stage apart from The Temper Trap are from Melbourne and they’ve just recorded their debut album with renowned UK producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, Bjork, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Kasabian). They’re also not tour shy so I’m looking forward to featuring them on musicmule sometime soon.

‘Sweet Disposition’ is the first snippet of the album they’ve released to whet our appetites for the rest of the record due out ‘in early 2009’.

Moreish like crack.
