What? Grouper is Liz Harris of Portland, Oregon. She writes minimal folk tunes and delivers them with a sweet yet haunting vocal style. She had one of my albums of 2008, ‘Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill’. For Fans Of: Bon Iver, Vashti Bunyan, Natural Snow Buildings. Continue reading

What? Chief are from new York but have more of a Southern Rock sound. Jangly guitar lines and heartfelt lyrics. Their Myspace claims they’re like the offspring of Grant Lee Buffalo and Oasis with Neil Young as the uncle. Interesting. For Fans Of: My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, The Drive By Truckers. What? Smoke Fairies are Katherine and Jessica, a blues-folk female duo from London who developed their sound playing in New Orleans while on an exchange year at University. Gorgoeus dark guitar play punctuated with the sultry female voices, Bryan Ferry and Richard Hawley approved no less. Read on to check out the cracking support lineup too. Upset the Rhythm presents: Ariel Pink + Holloys @ The Luminaire, May 20th.

What? Ariel Pink

Ariel Pink headlines this Upset The Rhythm night at one of my favourite venues in London, The Luminaire in Kilburn. Ariel Pink has been producing wonky self recorded bedroom pop in his bedroom for years now but he’s been receiving a lot more attention of late with his album ‘Worn Copy’, released under the Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti moniker, earning him a place in Amazon’s top 100 indie albums of all time list.

For Fans Of: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, The Flaming Lips.

Support comes from a teaming up of New York noise artist Prurient & the altogether more poppy Cold Cave of Pennsylvania, Ô Paon and Holloys.

It’s Holloys that I’m particularly excited to see after recently acquiring their fantastic ‘Art Wars’ EP,  an enthralling and danceable noise which Rough Trade describes as “beat-heavy blend of trance, dance, afropop polyrhythm, neo-prog, electronica and soaring pop melodies”. Be sure to get their early to catch them.

When? Wednesday, May 2oth. Doors 7.30pm

Where? The Luminaire, Kilburn.

Crystal Stilts, The Windmill, Feb 13th 09

What? Crystal Stilts

Just one of Brooklyn’s many rising stars from the past year but one worth noting. They play dark but uplifting, reverb heavy surf tinged, psychedelic guitar tunes with a bit of a Joy Divison thing going on with front man Brad’s vocals. Their album Alight Of Night was one of the best of 2008 according to me and many others. Probably the coolest band you’ll see in a while!

For Fans Of: Joy Division, Deerhunter, Women.

Support: Comes from Brighton’s Shrag and the minimalist punk rhythms and shoegaze of Oslo’s Maribel.

When? Monday, May 25th.

Where? The Luminaire, Kilburn.

What? The Asteroids Galaxy Tour / Official Secrets Act / David Gedge

A Danish ensemble from Copenhagen featuring the songwiritng talents of Lars Iversen and the unique vocal style of Mette Lindberg (think Joanna Newsom meets Lykke Li meets Billie Holliday) then add guitars, bass, trumpet, sax and drums to that and you have The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. They got a great reaction at SXSW this year from their energetic, colourful pop jams.
