Local Natives

What? Local Natives were one of the hits of SXSW this year. I featured them in Just For Kicks recently and can’t get enough of their sunny harmonies and off kilter pop melodies. This is one to get excited about and tell your friends you’ve already seen them when they’re massive! For Fans Of: Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Vampire Weekend. Continue reading

That Miles Benjamin Antony Robinson is a man of many names I am certain of but is he also the man of many talents as he has been dubbed by musos around the world? I went to his debut UK headline show at The Lexington near Kings Cross to find out. Continue reading

miles benjamin anthony robinson

What? Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson is thankfully good enough to warrant all those names. A 25 year old Brooklyn troubadour whose debut album is just out on Transgressive records and features cameos from members of Grizzly Bear and TV On The Radio. Catch him at this Rockfeedback night before he’s packing out venues twice the size. For Fans Of: Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith, Micah P Hinson. Continue reading

James Yuill & Friends @ The Lexington, May 14th.

James Yuill - Laptop Wizard

What? James Yuill has a knack for throwing together a line up and he’s done it again for this Thurs night in Islington. Apart from James the line-up features the bordering on new Music Mule obsessions Django Django and the synth pop noodlings and perhaps my next new obsession Fenech-Soler. James Yuill is the king of electro-folk – think Kings Of Convenience remixed by Chemical Bros. For Fans Of: Er.. Kings Of Convenience and Chemical Bros!

Django Django have been on my stereo a lot since discovering them on MySpace and catching them at Camden Crawl. The vibe is electro tinged folk freak-outs. For Fans Of: The Earlies, Archie Bronson Outfit, Animal COllective.

Fenech-Soler are new to me but not for much longer I hope. They sound great. Continuing along the 80s obsessed theme of today’s music scene but thankfully with some real substance. Excited about this! For Fans Of: Neon Neon, Empire Of The Sun, Tigercity, Radio 4.

When? Thursday, May 14th.

Where? The Lexington, Islington.

What? Left With Pictures

They’re a four piece of classically trained musicians who now take it upon themselves to play the catchiest folk/chamber pop songs in the land. Quintessentially English sounding and vocally powerful with three members exchanging lead vocal duties. They played completely unplugged last time I saw them and were none the worst for it. Powerful yet twee stuff!

This gig is the launch for new double A-side single – Every Stitch, Every Line / Her Father’s Nose which has been getting some nice write ups. It’s not out till May 18th but you’ll be able to buy a copy on Saturday so get on down there. For now, check out the b-side below.

For Fans Of: Belle & Sebastien, The Leisure Society, Slow Club.

My Sad Captains – ‘Yo La Tengo’s indie-pop savvy, Pavement at their sweetest, and a touch of Broken Social Scene’ – Drowned In Sound

The Outside Royalty – “I fell in love with it immediately… How are these guys not signed?” – Colin Murray

The Riff Raff – ‘The kind of no-nonsense music that was around a long time ago with the likes of AC/DC and Zeppelin’ – MySpace.

When? Saturday, May 2nd.

Richard Swift @ The Lexington, May 4th.

Posted in Gigs, Hot Tickets, Tracks with tags , , , on April 23, 2009 by musicmuleblog

What? Richard Swift

There was a practically a riot caused by A&R men scrapping for his signature at SXSW last year. Luckily the wonderful Secretly Canadian won the fight and release his latest offering ‘The Atlantic Ocean’ sometime in April. He’s dubbed as a contemporary piano balladeer and boy does he have talent. Taking in styles from Mowtown soul to Doo-wop to American pop there’s a great mix of sounds all delivered with his wonderful rich voice and wry sense of humour.

For Fans Of: Eels, Stevie Wonder, Scritti Polliti.

Support: British jangly guitar upstarts Larsen B sound like they’re well worth catching.

When? Monday, May 4th.

Where? The Lexington, Islington.
