Local Natives

What? Chess Club presents Local Natives, one of the hits of SXSW this year, featured in Just For Kicks recently, I can’t get enough of their sunny harmonies and off kilter pop melodies. Live they feature tribal drumming and apparently those voices are killer. For Fans Of: Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Vampire Weekend. Continue reading

the joy formidable

What? The Joy Formidable have had a great few months. Since I last saw them at SWN festival they’ve released their debut album ‘A Ballon Called Moaning’ to critical acclaim and have toured the length and breadth of the country. No reason to stop now then as Ritzy, Rhidian and Matt bring their live show to London to convert another venue full of punters. Continue reading

What? Pink Mountaintops

Pink Mountaintops are Steve McBean’s (of Canadain band Black Mountain fame) psychedelic, noise pop side project. Mojo magazine recently described them as ‘The Velvet Underground to Black Mountain’s Black Sabbath’. That pretty much hits the nail on the head but on their third and latest album ‘Outside Love’ there’s even the odd bit of country thrown in to the mix.

For Fans Of: The Velvet Underground, Black Mountain, Comets On Fire.

Support: Django Django are one the most exciting new British bands I’ve come across of late. Think The Earlies meets Animal Collective meets Archie Bronson Outfit.

When? Monday, May 11th.

Where? The Borderline, Soho.

How Much? £10

What? Port O’Brien

Californian’s Port O’Brien first caught my ear in 2007 with the simple, catchy collection of sea shanties and drunken folk stompers that was ‘The Wind and The Swell’ mini album. They followed that up with the better produced (although perhaps a little less charm?) and fuller band affair of 2008’s ‘All We Could Do Was Sing’ which amongst new tracks included a re-recording of their most memorable song and live favourite ‘I Woke Up Today. A lot of fun in the flesh with improvised percussion, big guitar licks and Arcade Fire Style communal singing. Maybe a little sloppy at times but that’s all part of the package.

For Fans Of: Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Bodies Of Water.

When? Tuesday, Aug 18th.

Where? The Borderline, Soho.

How Much? £8
