Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Shepherds Bush Empire by

mp3: Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll

A friend wisely pointed out to me that Yeah Yeah Yeahs are quite unique in that they are band that can be appreciated by fans across almost all genres (save maybe doo-wop fans, it’s inexplicable but those guys hate them!). Whether you’re an indie, rock, dance, dub, hip-hop, jazz, electro, emo, prog (the list goes on) fan then there’s some level you can appreciate this great band on. Whether it’s for the emotionally charged lyrical performance and stage presence of one of the best front ladies in the business, Karen-O, the jazz influenced drumming of king of the sticks, Brian Chase or trademark raw guitar, newly added disco riff and keyboards of Nick Zinner, there is something for all to admire. A different kettle of fish musically but perhaps The Arcade Fire is the other recent band that can lay claim to such an achievement? Continue reading

The wonderful, all powerful Yeah Yeah Yeahs tour in support of their forthcoming ‘In Blitz’ album (See ‘On Repeat’ for details of that). Definitely one of my favourite bands and live Karen O is an unrivalled performer these days from her energy to her dress sense. Then you’ve got the majestic guitar of Nick Zinner and the jazzy drumming of Brian Chase. Perfection. Don’t miss this.

What? Alela Diane

Alela Diane’s ‘Pirate Gospel’ album won Rough Trade’s album of the year prize in 2006 and she’s just about to release the much anticipated follow up ‘To Be Still’ which has been winning some rave reviews. Her date at St Giles In The Fields sold out in good time so she’s announced a new date and her biggest headline show to date in Shepherds Bush later in the year. Sure it’s a long way off but don’t be complacent – this will sell out. For those unfamilar with Alela listen to the below track from her Daytrotter Session. A fuller version of the song features on her new album.

When? Thursday, Sept 17th.

Where? Shepherds Bush Empire, West London.

How Much? £15

TVOTR set list, Shep Bush, 19th Nov

Last night the incredible TV On The Radio delivered yet another astounding live performance for those lucky enought to have a ticket. These guys have been one of the best bands around for a good few years now and I’ve never seen them put in anything other than their all when playing. The gig was to support their latest critically acclaimed album Dear Science which according to Hypem is the second top rated album on the net for 2008. Quite an achievement!

Fleet Foxes, Shepherds Bush Empire, 5th Nov

Fleet Foxes, Shepherds Bush, Nov 08

Fleet Foxes were on flying form last night despite Robin Pecknold admitting to a bit of a sore throat. It’s hardly suprising the way he sings. His voice can fill a room and beyond and is the driving force behind many of the Foxes songs. It is given ample support and extra layers from the remaining members of the band and their harmonies are almost as perfect as on record. Highlights predictably come in ‘He Doesn’t Know Why’, ‘Drops In The Ocean’, ‘Your Protector’ and a personal favourite ‘Mykonos’ from their excellent Sun Giant EP.

One thing newcomers don’t expect when they come to a Fleet Foxes show is witty inter-song chat but that’s exactly what you get. Tonight Robin’s insight into Obama’s recent victory in the democratic nomination has the crowd in stitches, comparing him to an old friend who you could say ‘Barrack, what the fuck?’ to if he doesn’t deliver on his promises.

A great way to cap an astounding first year for this special band.
