On Repeat: The Wave Pictures – Now You Are Preganant

mp3: The Wave Pictures – Now You Are Pregnant

Another on Repeat today comes from cheeky Northerners The Wave Pictures and their excellent track ‘Now You Are Pregnant’. I’m a big Johnny Cash fan so for me to overlook the J.C. bashing chorus takes a lot but this song is worth it and it’s a pretty funny analogy even if I don’t agree with it. I’m talking about the line ‘Johnny Cash died today and you’d say it’s not like Elvis, it’s not like Elvis though is it and you would be right’. Look out for new album ‘Leave It Alone’ coming soon and preceded by a single of the same name out today.

For Fans Of: The Smiths, Jeffrey Lewis, Jeremy Warmsley.

What? Danny Schmidt

Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt is a writer’s writer, with a lyrical depth drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, and Dave Carter. Upon winning the prestigious Kerrville New Folk award in 2007, Sing Out Magazine tagged Schmidt “the best new songwriter we’ve heard in 15 years.” Just one man sitting alone on stage with his acoustic guitar and his poetry, in the timeless troubadour tradition, his musical influences draw from deeply-rooted Appalachian mountain gospel to haunted English balladry, from syncopated Piedmont country blues to vagabond 60’s protest folk-stumpery. But it all boils down to just great songwriting, in a singular style all his own. Not to be missed.

For Fans Of: Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Dave Carter.

When? Thursday, April 30th.

Where? Green Note, Camden.

What? Darker My Love

I saw these Californians supporting A Place To Bury Strangers the other day. They stole the show on a tough bill with their distorted, psychedelic guitar jams. A really tight band, if you like noisy, guitar heavy tunes then this will make your day. Highly recommended.

Where? The Lexington, Islington.
