mp3: Golden Silvers – True Romance (True No9 Blues)

Sure there are a ridiculous number of faux 8os acts around at the moment but if half of them could write a tune like this one then we’d be onto a winner. Unfortunately most of them can’t live up to Golden Silvers and the song writing and (a little bit Morrissey,a little bit Albarn) delivery of front man Gwilym Gold. Shake your thang!

For Fans Of: New Order, Neon Neon, Blur, FrYars.

live: ICA, April 24th.

pre-order: True Romance (No9 Blues)  7″

mp3: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Young Adult Friction

This is an irresistible indie pop gem from New Yorks rising stars The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. It’s a guitar driven tale of young adults getting down to business in the library. Tut tut! Peggy’s sweet female vocal line of ‘Now that you feel’ offsets the track beautifully. It was a toss up between this and my favourite new song about incest, the fantastically titled – ‘This Love Is Fucking Right!’. The album is a gem, buy it, seriously.

For Fans Of: Belle & Sebastian + distortion, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Vivian Girls, The Manhattan Love Suicides.

live: May 15th/ June 9th / June 10th

mp3: Bruce Springsteen – I’m On Fire (Cousin Cole’s Bad Desire Remix)

New York DJ Cousin Cole gives The Boss’ 1984 classic ‘I’m On Fire’ a dreamy electronic makeover. Pefect to sink back into the sofa with, even better sitting in the sun with a drink in hand. Cousin Cole is one half of Flagrant Fowl with fellow New York DJ Pocketknife. He cuts the music with so much class! Indeed.

For Fans Of: Bruce Springsteen, Air France, Moby.

Ed Bagira, Hoxton B&G, Feb 10th 09

On a couple of occassions recently I’ve come away from gigs debating whether I preferred the unknown support band or the one I actually bought the ticket to see. A good advertisement for the healthy state of the London music scene at the moment and a fine reward for simply getting to a show early.

Tonight it happens again when I’m blown away by the Josef K meets Television meets Nirvana post-punk of ‘Ed Bagira’. Frontman Chris’ slight figure still manages to cut a good presence and his vocal style is a delicate balance between singing and timely, throaty growls. The three piece lineup of guitar, bass and drums provide that tight, direct sound that served bands like Nirvana so well. They can play some too, swapping instruments for a song mid set and showing no loss of fluency for another well worked jam of a song. I’m unsure whether the band had any input for it but the McDonalds ridiculing slideshow going on in the background of their set served as an amusing focus of attention for times when your eyes wanted to wander a little even if your ears were still very much engaged. Review: The Thermals, The Lexington, Feb 9th 2009.

the-thermals-the lexington-feb 9th 09

So I came into this evening relatively blind as far as my knowledge of The Thermals‘ material was concerned. I’d seen the band once before but this was a drunken, chance encounter which I never suitably followed up. Tonight I’m here on the recommendation of a friend, thanks Ollie, and I’m determined to pay more attention.

Support band Calories warm the audience up with their punky songs, comical lyrical interplay between all three members and warnings of ‘mosh circles’. The novelty wears off quickly and I’m left badly wanting of some substance and a little offended by some of their squeaks and squals.

The Thermals play to a sold out Lexington tonight, a venue that boasts one of the most exciting live programs around since it changed from it’s Clockwork incarnation last year. This isn’t a one off for the band either, four of their five UK dates in February sold out in good time and it’s clear from the outset that there are a lot of dedicated fans in the audience this evening eager to share their knowledge of the band’s previous three albums.

For someone unfamiliar with the band on record it was still easy to pick out some of their big numbers. One being Continue reading

On Repeat: The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition

Posted in On Repeat with tags , , , on February 10, 2009 by musicmuleblog

the-temper-trap

This song is epic. What a great guitar line and the guy’s voice is amazing. He’s called Dougy by the way. I don’t know a lot else at this stage apart from The Temper Trap are from Melbourne and they’ve just recorded their debut album with renowned UK producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, Bjork, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Kasabian). They’re also not tour shy so I’m looking forward to featuring them on musicmule sometime soon.

‘Sweet Disposition’ is the first snippet of the album they’ve released to whet our appetites for the rest of the record due out ‘in early 2009’.

Moreish like crack.

frYars, Hoxton Hall, March 3rd

Posted in Gigs, Music Video, Tickets, Tracks with tags , , , , on February 9, 2009 by musicmuleblog

What? frYars

London based teenager Ben Garrett is frYars. I first came across him two years ago when a colleague of mine started to manage this young prodigy who was only 17 at the time. Since then under his frYars pseudonym Ben has been writing songs, playing live and turning heads. His track ‘the ides’ was one of my favourites of 2007 and more recently he’s released the excellent ‘Visitors’ featuring Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode on backing vocals. His blend of electronica/indie and dark humorous lyrics are hopefully here to stay.

When? Tuesday, March 3rd.

Where? Hoxton Hall, Shoreditch.

How Much? £9
