What? The Young Knives / Hook and The Twin / Django Django / Hind Ear

Oxford’s finest 3-piece The Young Knives are back to promote the release of their new single ‘Dyed In The Wool’. More meaty riffs and dry, humorous delivery it would seem. This date is part of an ‘Off The Beaten Track’ tour. London wasn’t too off the track last time I checked. Hmmm
For Fans Of: We Are Scientists, The Futureheads, The Cribs.

Support: The bizarrely named Hook And The Twin sound like some sort of 80s B-Horror movie, disco soundtrack. They’re a two-piece form London featuring vocals, effects, guitars, synth, bass and drums. Dark disco treats.
For Fans Of: The Ghost Frequency, Ariel Pink, The Soft Pack.

More support: Django Django may well be one of the most exciting new sounds I’ve heard in a while. Percussion heavy with psychedelic vocal harmonies. If you don’t get a chance to see them at Camden Crawl this weekend then catch them here.
For Fans Of: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Archie Bronson Outfit.

Even more support: comes from the psychedelic jams of Hind Ear.

When? Thursday, April 30th.

Where? Hoxton Bar & Grill, Shoreditch.

How Much? £7 adv / £8 door

mp3: The Wave Pictures – Now You Are Pregnant

Another on Repeat today comes from cheeky Northerners The Wave Pictures and their excellent track ‘Now You Are Pregnant’. I’m a big Johnny Cash fan so for me to overlook the J.C. bashing chorus takes a lot but this song is worth it and it’s a pretty funny analogy even if I don’t agree with it. I’m talking about the line ‘Johnny Cash died today and you’d say it’s not like Elvis, it’s not like Elvis though is it and you would be right’. Look out for new album ‘Leave It Alone’ coming soon and preceded by a single of the same name out today.

For Fans Of: The Smiths, Jeffrey Lewis, Jeremy Warmsley.

Go See: The Wave Pictures @ ICA, April 15th.

Wow yesterday was Day 1 of 5 for music at SXSW 2009. I’m feeling a little wonky but here’s a run through of my highlights from yesterday starting with this post and going up ^

mp3: The Mae Shi – Are U Professional?

The Mae Shi – who the f£$K are they? Yep that’s what I thought. These guys were the first band I caught yesterday and very nearly the best. Amazing punk energy from this L.A. based four piece (signed to Moshi Moshi in the UK but unsigned elsewhere). The highlight of which was when singer/guitarist and drummer came into the crowd, covered us with a parachute and performed the intro to one of their tracks from underneath. Amazing! Really loud, really passionate music. The above mp3 is a song they made out of Christian Bale’s infamous rant on the set of the new Terminator movie. It’s great but check out their MySpace for more typical (if there is such a thing with this band) songs.

For Fans Of: And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Flaming Lips, Future Of The Left, Titus Andronicus.

Moshi Moshi Night feat. The Soft Pack, Chew Lips & Teeth, Feb 26th

Posted in Gig Pictures, Gigs, Tickets with tags , , , , , , on February 16, 2009 by musicmuleblog

CHEW LiPS, Buffalo Bar Cardiff, Nov 08 by musicmule.co.uk

So unless you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the sold out School of Seven Bells at Cargo then this is my suggested alternative for the cancelled Gang Gang Dance gig which was scheduled for the same night.

What? The Soft Pack + CHEW LiPS + Teeth

The Soft Pack have gained a lot of attention of late for changing their name from The Muslims. Apparently it wasn’t meant to be any great statement, they just liked the sound of it. But in the end too many feathers were ruffled and it was distracting from their music which is an addictive mix of The Strokes, The Stooges and Violent Femmes’ surf tinged guitar tunes.

CHEW LiPS are musicmule favourites despite not having released anything official yet, debut single Solo is out through French label Kitsuné on March 23rd. Frontlady extraordinaire Tigs is the new Roisin Murphy (Moloko) and is backed up by DFA like electronic beats, guitar and keys. Special.

Teeth are new to me, hailing from Philadelphia they have one album under their belts, ‘You’re My Lover Now’, which was Daytrotter’s 12th favourite album of 2007. The material is a real mixed bag of musical styles, everything from honky-tonk to garage rock and Mersey beat. Download the free Daytrotter session.

When? Thursday, Feb 26th.

Where? Hoxton Bar and Grill, Shoreditch.

How Much? £5
