What? Left With Pictures

They’re a four piece of classically trained musicians who now take it upon themselves to play the catchiest folk/chamber pop songs in the land. Quintessentially English sounding and vocally powerful with three members exchanging lead vocal duties. They played completely unplugged last time I saw them and were none the worst for it. Powerful yet twee stuff!

This gig is the launch for new double A-side single – Every Stitch, Every Line / Her Father’s Nose which has been getting some nice write ups. It’s not out till May 18th but you’ll be able to buy a copy on Saturday so get on down there. For now, check out the b-side below.

For Fans Of: Belle & Sebastien, The Leisure Society, Slow Club.

Support:

My Sad Captains – ‘Yo La Tengo’s indie-pop savvy, Pavement at their sweetest, and a touch of Broken Social Scene’ – Drowned In Sound

The Outside Royalty – “I fell in love with it immediately… How are these guys not signed?” – Colin Murray

The Riff Raff – ‘The kind of no-nonsense music that was around a long time ago with the likes of AC/DC and Zeppelin’ – MySpace.

When? Saturday, May 2nd.

Where? The Lexington, Islington.

What? Micachu & The Shapes + The Old Romantic Killer Band + Favours For Sailors + Left With Pictures

Four bands for free this Saturday courtesy of the Clash Magazine Social. I’ve already sung the praises of Micachu & The Shapes who wowed me at Swn fest in 2008 with young Mica and co’s wonky indie pop gems. She’s set to be a star.
For fans of: The Beta Band, Kid Carpet.

The Old Romantic Killer Band released their debut ‘The Swan With Two Necks’ late last year to some noteable praise form the likes of NME and Drowned In Sound. They play loud, tuneful rock. Label mates with the excellent Wild Beasts.
For fans of: Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters.

Favours For Sailors write and play punky guitar tunes laden with pop hooks.
For fans of: Weezer, The Cribs, Pavement.

Left With Pictures have become one of my early favourites this year. Quality British folk pop. Tuneful, intelligent and with a wry humour.
For fans of: Belle and Sebastian, Adem, The Moldy Peaches.

When? Saturday, Feb 28th. 16.00 till 20.00

Where? Notting Hill Arts Club, Notting Hill.

How Much? FREE

Tickets? FREE just rock up at 4pm.

Review: Shh Festival Of Quiet Music, Bush Hall, Feb 1st

Posted in Gig Pictures, Gigs, Music Reviews with tags , , , , , on February 2, 2009 by musicmuleblog

So the Shh Festival of Quiet Music took upon itself to nurse our Sunday hangovers and gently reaffirm our faith in the world through the less abrasive side of music on show this evening in Shepherds Bush. All in all it did a pretty fine job.

Here’s a guide to some of musicmule’s favourite performances from the night:

Olivia Chaney, Shh Festival of Quiet Noise, Feb 09

First up is Olivia Chaney complete with her Indian Harmonium and a voice you’ll be hearing a lot more from with any luck. We are treated to a couple of Olivia’s own quintessentially English sounding folk songs as well as an expertly delivered French number ‘A Upres de ma Blonde’ and an interpretation of ‘Oblivion Soave’ from Monteverdi’s Poppea opera. Olivia is versatile to say the least and could have easily fitted in higher up the bill.

Animal Magic Tricks, Shh Festival of Quiet Music, Feb 1st 09

Animal Magic Tricks are second to catch the ear. One lady band Frances Laura Donnely also possesses a voice that could melt the evening’s sudden downpour of snow. Her songs are unconventional folk ditties which make use of toy keyboards and strange sounding loops evoking comparisons to Tunng and even Animal Collective’s school of song making. At one point Frances samples herself blowing into the mic and with this initially offensive sound she manages to somehow make a song that works on a weird level. The only disappointment is that Animal Magic Tricks offered no Animals nor magic tricks. Just one measly rabbit out a hat would have kept me quiet.

What? Liz Green + Left With Pictures + Valgeir Sigurdsson amongst others.

A festival on the quieter and less muddy end of the spectrum. The artists I’m most excited about on this lazy Sunday line-up are Liz Green who is definitely a star on the rise and South East London’s Left With Pictures who play beautiful ‘chamber pop’ tunes laden with harmonies and the occasional Lenin reference. Wonderful. There’s also headliner Valgeir Sigurdsson, who has been Bjork’s engineer for almost a decade, to look forward to.

When? Sunday, Feb 1st

Where? Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush.

How Much? £8
