Just for Kicks: Bill Callahan – The Wind And The Dove

Posted in Just For Kicks, Music Releases, Tracks with tags , , , on May 8, 2009 by musicmuleblog

Sunday’s choice comes from Bill Callahan who is better known as Smog or sometimes (Smog) and is also Joanna Newsom’s fella. Bill has been making great melancholy folk music since Joanna was a twinkle in her daddy’s eye or not far off there (1988). But it sounds to me like maybe some of her orchestrated leanings from last album ‘Ys’ have rubbed off on Bill’s latest album ‘Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle’ and in particular this stunning track ‘The Wind And The Dove’ which features all kinds of eerie instrumentation, so much so that it makes me think of Raders Of The Lost Ark at times! Bill’s custom spoken vocals and understated guitar work fits in with it with surprising ease. It feels right.

What? Vetiver + Hush Arbors

Hailing from Florida and fronted by the super talented Andy Cabic, Vetiver count Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom as friends and sometime recording/stage mates. They play beautiful west coast laid back folk. I’ve seen them about 3 times and they never disappoint. Great with a bottle of red wine (maybe each). In London around the release of new album Tight Knit, in the US it’ll be their first album for the legendary Sub Pop label while over here it’s their first for almost as legendary Bella Union.

Support Hush Arbors take Vetiver’s occassional psychedelic tendencies onto the next level. I saw them supporting Department Of Eagles recently and was impressed enough to buy their album off the back of it.

This is the first of a series of Miles Of Smiles events at Cecil House, the headquarters for the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

When? Sat 28th Feb

Where? Cecil Sharp House, Regents Park Rd

How Much? £8
