Gang Gang Dance @ Dingwalls, June 1st 2009.

Gang Gang Dance seem to be attracted to infernos. In February all of their equipment burned to the ground along with the Amsterdam venue they had played the previous evening. Tonight in a packed Dingwalls the temperature must be somewhere close to that blaze. Continue reading

Everything Everything @ Camden Crawl 2009 by

What? Everything Everything

Another great playing thanks to those nice folks at Adventure in The Beetroot Field was Everything Everything, a new Manchester 4-piece. These guys sound like something to get very excited about. Elements of a lot of different bands I love rolled into one. They manage to sound prog-y but essentially poppy at the same time. Following hot on the heels of Animal Collective’s breakthrough album these guys have timed their arrival perfectly.

For Fans Of: Animal Collective, Radiohead, Interpol, Kate Bush.

What? Gang Gang Dance

I’m very excited about this one! This is rescheduled from their original February date which they had to pull out of after all of their expensive gear caught fire while left in an Amsterdam venue over night. Tough luck but they’re back to hypnotise us with their pulsating middle eastern rhythms, dub, grime, off kilter dance beats and whatever else they fancy. Their album St. Dymphna was one of the best of 2008. Oh and they’re from Brooklyn and they count TV On The Radio, Hot Chip and Klaxons amongst their fans in case you weren’t sure of their credentials! They are pretty full on though so listen before you buy!

For Fans Of: UNKLE, TV On The Radio, Fuck Buttons, Telepathe.

When? Monday, June 1st.

Where? Dingwalls, Camden.

How Much? £11.50

What? Gang Gang Dance

They hail from New York but not Brooklyn which makes a change. Weird beats and psychedelic tribal dance tunes. Latest offering Saint Dymphna was one of my albums of the year in 2008 and personally I can’t wait to hear it performed live but recommend getting some background knowledge yourself before buying tickets as this isn’t for everyone.

When? Thursday Feb 26th.

Where? Dingwalls, Camden.

How Much? £11

Little Joy take Camden by storm, 21st Jan

Little Joy were in town last night for a one off London gig to support their wondrous debut album. Support came from talented The Dead Trees who have toured with Little Joy for a run of over 40 dates. Tonight was their last prompting emotional goodbyes as both bands took the stage for the majority of Little Joy’s set. While the support went down well for a relative unknown it was the headliners who deservedly stole the show.

There were a lot of Brazilians in the audience there to support Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos) who takes lead vocal duty for most of Little Joy’s songs. He delivered the goods and had the audience eating out of his hand from first song ‘Evaporar’ with it’s Portugese vocals and hushed electric guitar. From there on in they never looked back as Fab Moretti (The Strokes) lead ‘his’ band through (I think) every song off their debut album Little Joy (no prizes for inventive titles here). Other core member Binki Shapiro who has one of the sweetest voices I’ve heard in a while also impressed on a couple of their strongest songs ‘Unattainable’ and overall highlight ‘Don’t Watch Me Dancing’.

Fab ‘Fucking’ Moretti made a point to tell Dingwalls that they were the ‘best crowd ever’ a few too many times but by the end the applause was so loud that most people believed him.

My first big gig of January comes in the shape of Little joy who are Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti’s side project featuring the multi instrumentalist and Nico sounding Binki Shapiro and Devendra Banhart collaborator Rodrigo Amarante also of Los Hermanos. Their debut album Little Joy is a very laid back and pleasurable listen.

White Denim, Dingwalls, 18th Nov

Another great U.S. band to catch this week are the mighty White Denim. Debut album ‘Workout Holiday’ has been a firm favourite of mine this year and their reputation for explosive live performances precedes them. Expect almost Hendrix style guitar jams and a superhuman rhythm section to boot. Oh and that voice!

What? White Denim

Where? Dingwalls, Camden.

When? Tues 18th Nov.
