crystal stilts

What? Crystal Stilts are a cool as fuck Brooklyn guitar band who play reverb heavy dark disco/surf tunes with a foot in the past but their hearts and heads pointed firmly forwards. Whatever the hell that means! Dark, danceable, sexy tunes well performed and with the ice cool delivery of front man Brad Hargett. They made one of the best albums of 2008 with their debut ‘Alight The Night’. They impressed me at The Windmill in Brixton last year.

For Fans Of: Joy Division, Deerhunter, The Jesus And Mary Chain.

Support comes from Christchurch, New Zealand easy going rockers The Bats and UK indie rockers Comet Gain who sopund like they have a bit of a Long Blondes vibe going on. Nowt bad.

When? Friday, May 22nd.

Where? ICA, The Mall.

How Much? £12.50

Tickets? ICA Website

mp3: Crystal Stilts – Crippled Croon

Crystal Stilts, The Windmill, Feb 13th 09

What? Crystal Stilts

Just one of Brooklyn’s many rising stars from the past year but one worth noting. They play dark but uplifting, reverb heavy surf tinged, psychedelic guitar tunes with a bit of a Joy Divison thing going on with front man Brad’s vocals. Their album Alight Of Night was one of the best of 2008 according to me and many others. Probably the coolest band you’ll see in a while!

For Fans Of: Joy Division, Deerhunter, Women.

Support: Comes from Brighton’s Shrag and the minimalist punk rhythms and shoegaze of Oslo’s Maribel.

When? Monday, May 25th.

Where? The Luminaire, Kilburn.

How Much? £10

Crystal Stilts – The SinKing

Pens – 1st support – I quite liked the first noisy, fun song. I spent the rest of Pens wondering why they were there. I concluded it was because they were having a ruddy good time, but mainly because the indie rock media is run by bored men who like to look at young female art students. And then I realized that that in itself is surely a form of art, to get me thinking about why a band are on stage. By the time I’d finished musing the set was over. So that validates Pens as a band for me.

Wavves – great name! Words I would associate with Wavves – Irony & Blink 182 and POP music.
It’s like a bouncy castle -> lots of fun, but gets boring after a while. The pop hooks keep it fresh, and the Blink 182 vocal connotations make me feel fuzzy. The falsetto is another thing which keeps me awake. Also, great name. Maybe you need to know the songs to appreciate the band more but I can’t help feeling that bands like this are popular on the strength of making the aging ruling males of the scene feel young and cutting edge again. Nevertheless, a good band, an important addition to the scene. What’s wrong wanting to feel young again? Well, you could be listening to something more interesting.

Crystal Stilts – finally, some real music and it comes from New York. Music which was consistently just plain good, it sounded great, loud, raw, and fucking cool, no bullshit. The type of cool which is born in New York. Plus having a lead singer who has the voice of Calvin Johnson helps to endear a band to my heart. Continue reading

Review: Crystal Stilts + A Classic Education – Windmill, Brixton. Feb 13th

Crystal Stilts – Converging In The Quiet

Tonight is Crystal Stilts’ first ever London gig. It’s been sold out for a few weeks now and on the Windmill mailout punters are told there is NO CHANCE of getting a ticket on the night. The buzz around the band has been building since Rough Trade record shop got their debut album ‘Alight of Night’ on import in the second half of 2008. It became their album of the week and around the same time started attracting praise from further afield, Pitchfork calling them ‘moody-sounding fuckers who make fabulous stripped-down garage-pop’. The album gets its official UK release tomorrow, February 16th, through Angular records.

A Classic Education, The Windmill, Feb 13th 09

First though support act A Classic Education are here to get us into gear and their Arcade Fire meets Vampire Weekend style, while a stark contrast to the headliners, helps to do just that. Frontman Jonathan’s voice is quite similar to that of Colin Meloy (Decemberists) and he’s an enigmatic, talented performer. I’ll definitely be looking further into this Bologna based outfit. With the crowd now raring to go the scene is set for Crystal Stilts to make this night theirs. Continue reading

Over from NYC for their first show in the UK. Their debut album alight of night which was out last year  is a real grower. Sure it sounds like it was recorded in a dustbin but has some great tunes behind the echoes. The best description I’ve heard so far is ‘like joy division underwater’! (thanks ffrenchie) Snap these up quick only 20 more available online at last check.
