The Soft Pack – Extinction

CHEW LiPS – Salt Air

Holy shit The Muslims were good tonight! Sorry, I mean The Soft Pack! They used to be called The Muslims you see but a few too many feathers were ruffled for that one to last. Anyway forget the name, tonight it’s the music that is most memorable. Like anyone I’m guilty of exaggerating from time to time but to hell with it – The Soft Pack are my new favourite band. Wow this post is off the blasphemy scale at the moment isn’t it! As I write this, set list smugly in hand I can inform you that the band start with tracks: ‘On My Time’, ‘Faithman’ and ‘Right Wrong’ all of which I’m unfamiliar with, my experience of them so far limited to MySpace tracks and their brilliant ‘Nightlife’ 7” single.

The songs are thankfully good enough to make prior knowledge unnecessary for enjoyment. Front man Matt immediately demands your attention with his lazy yet hard hitting vocal style, he has a bit of a shy college boy Jagger thing going on, an effortless coolness, which is surely the best type of cool. After the opening trio we get ‘Extinction’ and cue the start of the mosh pit, something you wouldn’t generally expect at this trendy East London venue on a Thursday eve but the crowd are really into the band tonight. A couple more tracks, new to me, succeed in keeping us enthralled.

Then onto the home straight and the best ten minutes of live music I’ve seen all year and the bar has already been set pretty high. Continue reading

Moshi Moshi Night feat. The Soft Pack, Chew Lips & Teeth, Feb 26th

CHEW LiPS, Buffalo Bar Cardiff, Nov 08 by

So unless you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the sold out School of Seven Bells at Cargo then this is my suggested alternative for the cancelled Gang Gang Dance gig which was scheduled for the same night.

What? The Soft Pack + CHEW LiPS + Teeth

The Soft Pack have gained a lot of attention of late for changing their name from The Muslims. Apparently it wasn’t meant to be any great statement, they just liked the sound of it. But in the end too many feathers were ruffled and it was distracting from their music which is an addictive mix of The Strokes, The Stooges and Violent Femmes’ surf tinged guitar tunes.

CHEW LiPS are musicmule favourites despite not having released anything official yet, debut single Solo is out through French label Kitsuné on March 23rd. Frontlady extraordinaire Tigs is the new Roisin Murphy (Moloko) and is backed up by DFA like electronic beats, guitar and keys. Special.

Teeth are new to me, hailing from Philadelphia they have one album under their belts, ‘You’re My Lover Now’, which was Daytrotter’s 12th favourite album of 2007. The material is a real mixed bag of musical styles, everything from honky-tonk to garage rock and Mersey beat. Download the free Daytrotter session.

When? Thursday, Feb 26th.

Where? Hoxton Bar and Grill, Shoreditch.

How Much? £5

Telepathe & CHEW LiPS, Catch 22, Dalston 24th Nov

The first day in what promises to be a great week of gigs for London.

This girl duo are supposedly David Sitek of TV On The Radio‘s favourite band. Coincidentally he’s just produced their debut album Dance Mother which is all dark brooding beats (they’re fans of UK dubstep), sweet synth and tribal rhythms with the girls’ combined speak/chant/sing fitting sweetly over the top. Support on the night comes from the excellent CHEW LiPS who I can recommend from last weeks Swn festival.

Telepathe – So Fine

Sŵn 2008: A brief band review.

This festival is a better representative of the wristband festival than say The Great Escape as there are a lot of good venues very close to one another and with the exception of one or two you seem to always be able to get in at the last minute. This makes gig hopping much easier but nevertheless I still managed to miss some noteworthy performers such as Eugene McGuinness and Golden Silvers. Here are links and some pics (shot by yours truly) of some bands that provided my weekend highlights:
