mp3: Holloys – Lake Land

Holloys is the vehicle for the music of Los Angeles based visual artist and songwriter Jim Brown. Word has it the band used to go for a more ambient noise sound but thankfully on their ‘Art Wars’ EP they’ve progressed to an altogether more danceable and on occasions poppy sound. But make no mistake this is music with substance, full of a variety of cultural influences and sounds from prog to dance to trance to afro-pop. The track I’ve picked is EP opener ‘Lake Land’ with it’s glorious almost bhangra style guitar lick and it’s call to arms lyrics of ‘I send the holloys’. It’s not the most obvious track off the EP, it is ‘Heart Mission’ which will grab the headlines but ‘Lake Land’ may have more longevity. Buy this EP from your new favourite band!

What? Ariel Pink

Ariel Pink headlines this Upset The Rhythm night at one of my favourite venues in London, The Luminaire in Kilburn. Ariel Pink has been producing wonky self recorded bedroom pop in his bedroom for years now but he’s been receiving a lot more attention of late with his album ‘Worn Copy’, released under the Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti moniker, earning him a place in Amazon’s top 100 indie albums of all time list.

For Fans Of: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, The Flaming Lips.

Support comes from a teaming up of New York noise artist Prurient & the altogether more poppy Cold Cave of Pennsylvania, Ô Paon and Holloys.

It’s Holloys that I’m particularly excited to see after recently acquiring their fantastic ‘Art Wars’ EP,  an enthralling and danceable noise which Rough Trade describes as “beat-heavy blend of trance, dance, afropop polyrhythm, neo-prog, electronica and soaring pop melodies”. Be sure to get their early to catch them.

When? Wednesday, May 2oth. Doors 7.30pm

Where? The Luminaire, Kilburn.

How Much? £8.50
