telepathe

Brooklyn duo Telepathe enchanted the 93 Feet East crowd last night with their catchy, undeniably cool brand of synth pop.

Stepping onto stage to little fanfare, Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudai played their set in almost complete darkness – an appropriate setting for their heavy rhythms and siren vocals. Continue reading

What? The Joy Formidable

Another of my favourite new bands in 2009. Based around the song writing of couple Ritzy (vocals/guitar) and Rhydian (backing vocals/bass) but make no mistake this is music with balls. Big, often dark, soaring rock songs. The band are currently out supporting Howling Bells while their debut 8-track release has been winning them rave reviews left right and centre.

When? Saturday, March 28th.

Where? 93 Feet East, Brick Lane.

What? Telepathe

Telepathe is one of my favourite new bands and evidently I’m in good company, as David Sitek (TV On The Radio) also loves this Brooklyn girl duo. So much so in fact that he produced their latest album, the brilliant Dance Mother. Their sound is tripped out, hypnotic dance music with lush synths, electronic beats and mesmerising female vocals. I love it.
For fans of: TV On The Radio, School Of Seven Bells, The Deer Tracks.

When?  Monday, May 11th.

Where? 93 Feet East, Brick Lane.

Wild Beasts – Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants

Napoleon iiird – Your God

Flash Guns – St George

Unlike at The Walkmen on Friday there was no big queue to be met outside the Wild Beasts show at 93 Feet East in Brick Lane yesterday evening, in fact to the unsuspecting eye you’d never even have guessed there was a gig going on. It’s not a sign of the lack of popularity of the bands playing but the opposite. You see the lineup tonight from start to finish this is top-drawer stuff so everyone’s inside early with bums on limited seats.

Flash Guns @ 93 Feet East, Feb 24th 09 by musicmule.co.uk

Flash Guns start the night off. Since I last saw them they’ve grown in reputation and actually physically grown I think! Explanation? They’re still in their not so late teens. It’s a shame to always make reference to their age but I only do it to poke fun at their older peers who are currently being outstripped by Flash Guns’ moving, intelligent four-minute guitar pop tunes. Frontman Samuel has a voice and on stage presence that could make him a great. I think of a young Joe Strummer and The Clash when I hear songs like ‘Locarno’ and closing number ‘St George’ with it’s patriotic tip of the hat to all things English.

Napoleon IIIrd @ 93 Feet East, Feb 234th 09 by musicmule.co.uk

Napoleon IIIrd’s track ‘Zebra’ I recently featured in ‘Just For Kicks’, unfortunately he doesn’t treat us to it this time but there’s plenty more on offer from new mini album Hideki Yukawa. Continue reading

Handsome Furs, 93 Feet East, April 8th

What? Handsome Furs

The band is husband/wife duo Dan Boeckner, from big favourites of mine Wolf Parade, and short story writer Alexei Perry. They make sometimes epic sometimes understated songs based around Dan’s instantly familiar voice and Alexei’s wordplay with some warm fuzzy guitars, keys and a drum machine to carry them along. For those who know Dan’s other band Handsome Furs will sound like a long lost friend while to others, after a while, you may wonder how you did without them. The below mp3 is taken from their forthcoming second album ‘Face Control’ which is released on 9th February, order it here.
