mp3: The Wave Pictures – Now You Are Pregnant

Another on Repeat today comes from cheeky Northerners The Wave Pictures and their excellent track ‘Now You Are Pregnant’. I’m a big Johnny Cash fan so for me to overlook the J.C. bashing chorus takes a lot but this song is worth it and it’s a pretty funny analogy even if I don’t agree with it. I’m talking about the line ‘Johnny Cash died today and you’d say it’s not like Elvis, it’s not like Elvis though is it and you would be right’. Look out for new album ‘Leave It Alone’ coming soon and preceded by a single of the same name out today.

For Fans Of: The Smiths, Jeffrey Lewis, Jeremy Warmsley.

Buy: Debut album  Instant Coffee Baby

Micachu - Jewellery

mp3: Micachu – Curly Teeth

‘Curly Teeth’ is taken from little Londoner’s Micahcu’s stunning debut album ‘Jewellery’. It’s got a dirty bass line, some far Eastern sounding acoustic guitar and understated vocals. Just the right combination of sloppy and spot on.

For Fans Of: The Beta Band, Kid Carpet, Metronomy.

buy: Micachu – Jewellery          CD /   DLoad

cymbals-eat-guitars-why-there-are-mountains

Apologies for the lateness of the post but I’m in the French alps with limited Internet access.

I’m going to throw in two Saturday tracks this week as a way of making up to you faithful MM readers.

There are some great new tracks from Delphic, Asobi Seksu, Cymbals Eat Guitars and The Leisure Society.

Here goes:

Friday (just pretend ok!)

mp3: Delphic – This Momentary (Monitor Mix)

This Mancunian lot Delphic are tipped for the top and from the sound of this little gem of an 80s tinged electro tune they could do just that. Reports are that they aren’t bad live either which pleases me greatly.

For Fans Of: Hot Chip, New Order, Neon Neon.

Choir Of Young Believers

mp3: Choir Of Young Believers – Action/Reaction

So I’ve already posted this  Choir Of Young Believers song up in my review of SXSW 2009 but this song has me hooked so much that I want to wave it in your faces one more time to make sure you don’t miss it! Gorgeous vocals, hypnotic drums. A beautiful warm noise.

A little bit of background – the band are from Copenhagen and in their full glory they are: Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, Anders Rhedin, Jakob Milung, Cæcilie Trier, Lasse Herbst, Casper Henning Hansen, Bo Rande, Mette Sand Hersoug, Nicolai Kleinerman and Sonja Labianca. Wowzers! They recently won Best New Act at the Danish equivalent to the Brits. I’m keeping eagle eyed for any UK tour dates that come up so watch this space.

For Fans Of: Fleet Foxes, Peter Bjorn & John, Midlake, Fleetwood Mac.

buy: Action/Reaction 7″

Just For Kicks – MusicMule’s Weekend Tracks, March 27th.

harlem dolphin-surfer

I take a bow to SXSW 2009 for inspiration for this week’s track selections. All of the Just For Kicks artists I’ve picked played this year’s festival and two of them call Austin their home. Leave some comments and let me know what you think…

Friday
mp3:
Frank Turner – Long Live The Queen

Frank Turner used to be in UK hardcore band Million Dead but in his own words ‘no-one gave a shit’ about them. Now as a solo artist he performs lyrically savvy, powerful, acoustic lead songs and ‘now people do give a shit’. Breaking the mould from my electro influenced Friday tracks of recent weeks, Long Live The Queen is a sad but ultimately uplifting acoustic sing along.

For Fans Of: Jeffrey Lewis, Chris T-T, Kid Harpoon, Lightspeed Champion.

Buy: Love Ire & Song

Saturday
mp3: Harlem – Psychedelic Tits

Austin punks Harlem impressed me with their raw, energetic punk at SXSW. Witty lyrics, jangly guitars and great bass lines too. On their MySpace they claim: ‘the only band we like is nirvana. the only album we like is nevermind. the only song we like is smells like teen spirit’. Make of that what you will. I love the song title guys!

For Fans Of: The Clash, Green Day, The Ramones and er… Nirvana.

Sunday
mp3: Danny Schmidt – This Too Shall Pass

Also haling from Austin Texas Danny Schmidt is a folk singer songwriter of the highest order. Haunting acoustic ballads and world wise lyrics. This is a great song. Look out for a post on his London gig in late April coming soon.

For Fans Of: Johnny Cash, Frank Black, Iron & Wine, Willy Mason.

Buy: Instead The Forest Rose To Sing

Friday
free mp3: Rogues – Not So Pretty (Feed Me Remix)

Rogues are another talented unsigned UK band – although I can’t seem to find out exactly where they’re from at the moment! Two guitars, bass, drums and big vocals. There are two brothers In their number too – Pearse (guitar/vox) & Thomas (drums) MacIntyre. This version is a near perfect remix from London DJ Feed Me. Can’t stop playing the sucker!

buy: Not So Pretty 7″

Saturday
free mp3: A Classic Education – Stay Son

This really gets into your head and stays there. This band are from Bologna although you couldn’t tell from the American vocal style. It’s infectious orchestral indie pop. They impressed me as support to Crystal Stilts at The Windmill recently.

For Fans Of: Decemberists, Shins, Band of Horses, Ra Ra Riot.

buy: Stay Son 12″ EP

Sunday
free mp3: Caleb Engstrom – Hoof

This is a really special track from young Caleb Engstrom of Iowa who promises to be one of the highlights of SXSW for me. Beautiful alt country/folk with thoughtful lyrics and a wonderful voice. Currently unsigned and unreleased over here but hopefully not for too much longer.

For Fans Of: Jose Gonzalez, Bon Iver, Elliot Smith.

buy: Building Day One (import)

What? Passion Pit

They’ve only released one excellent EP but already there’s a whole lot of buzz around this Massachusetts band and quite rightly so it would seem. I saw them at an instore recently and their psych electro pop jams are just as infective as on record. This gig is courtesy of that nice guy Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank.

For Fans Of: Friendly Fires, Chairlift, Empire Of The Sun.

When? Wednesday, May 13th.

Where? Heaven Under The Arches, Charing Cross.

How Much? TBC
