Just for Kicks: Bill Callahan – The Wind And The Dove

Posted in Just For Kicks, Music Releases, Tracks with tags , , , on May 8, 2009 by musicmuleblog

Sunday’s choice comes from Bill Callahan who is better known as Smog or sometimes (Smog) and is also Joanna Newsom’s fella. Bill has been making great melancholy folk music since Joanna was a twinkle in her daddy’s eye or not far off there (1988). But it sounds to me like maybe some of her orchestrated leanings from last album ‘Ys’ have rubbed off on Bill’s latest album ‘Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle’ and in particular this stunning track ‘The Wind And The Dove’ which features all kinds of eerie instrumentation, so much so that it makes me think of Raders Of The Lost Ark at times! Bill’s custom spoken vocals and understated guitar work fits in with it with surprising ease. It feels right.

Just For Kicks: Django Django – Storm

Posted in Just For Kicks, Tracks with tags on May 8, 2009 by musicmuleblog

So there’s a bit of mystery around the band I’ve selected for Saturday’s track choice, the currently unsigned Django Django. Their myspace says they’re from Dalstonburgh-Dunderry which I’m willing to bet isn’t a real place but something to do with the fact that the band are from Dunderry, Ireland and have now re-located to the indie music hub that Dalston is becoming. Sherlock Holmes had nothing on me! Anyway I caught them play a good set at Camden Crawl a couple of weeks back despite an average sound system and if the quality of the tunes on their myspace are anything to go by then there will be a record deal not too far around the corner. Fingers crossed anyway. Hypnotic percussion and haunting echoed vocals surround a playful guitar line and a hint of the electronic.

For Fans Of: The Beta Band, Animal Collective, Archie Bronson Outift.

Just For Kicks: Vega – No Reasons.

vega-well known pleasures

Friday’s track choice this week comes from Austin based electronic maestro Vega. The man behind Vega is Alan Palomo previously of another top notch Austin outfit Ghosthustler. This guy evidently has a way with a beat and a catchy chorus. ‘No Reasons’ is perhaps his sunniest, poppiest tune yet. It’s taken from the bands forthcoming debut EP ‘Well Known Pleasures’ which will be out Stateside later this month on Vogue College Records. Could be a hit if it gets any publicity. I’ve also thrown in an old Ghosthustler favourite of mine for y’all to get a feel of.

For Fans Of: Empire Of The Sun, The Golden Filter, Ghostland Observatory.

Just For Kicks – Bank Holiday Special

the-big-pink-velvet

As it’s a bank holiday I’m picking four tracks for you lucky people this week including Shock Defeat!, The Horrors, The Big Pink and The Leisure Society. Here’s hoping for a sunny one…

Friday

mp3: Shock Defeat! – Fast Hands

Shock Defeat! are Felix of Hot Chip’s favourite London band. Sure with their funky bass lines, noodly guitars and relentless disco drum beats on some levels they sound a lot like their peers Foals and The Rapture. But it’s the quirky vocal delivery of Nic Carter and their slightly off kilter stance more akin to Talking Heads or Devo that makes them a vital new addition to the scene. ‘Fast Hands’ is taken from their ‘Rubber Headband’ EP. The band are as yet unsigned but will be presumably self-releasing another EP, ‘Olympic Village’ soon. Meanwhile go see them live, I’ve heard great things. Date below.

For Fans Of: Talking Heads, The Rapture, Foals.

live: Be @ Proud Gallery, May 23rd.
