Telekinesis @ Merge Records party, The Parish, SXSW 2009 Day 4, Sat March 21st.

Telekinesis @ The Parish, SXSW 2009 by musicmule.co.uk

mp3: Telekinesis – Coast Of Carolina

Telekinesis from Seattle, Washington was one of the word of mouth successes of SXSW 2009. Having been recommended them by a few people independently, I finally caught up with them on the last day. Telekinesis on record is one man band Michael Benjamin Lerner. As talented as he is, only having two arms means that live he has to settle for performing drums and lead vocals from his kit at stage front. What a slacker! So on stage Michael is joined by a couple of guitarists and a keyboard player along for the ride. It’s big hearted, high tempo power pop and it sure is a lot of fun. They’ve signed to Merge Records and their debut album is due out in the U.S. in April and features Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie. Let’s hope it gets a UK release.

For Fans Of: The Shins, Of Montreal, Ra Ra Riot, Death Cab For Cutie.

Asobi Seksu @ Cedar Court, SXSW 2009 by musicmule.co.uk

mp3: Asobi Seksu – Familiar Light

Now I won’t be the first to write about Asobi Seksu in an exciting manner (they’ve been around since 2004) but it’s great when a band you think you’re going to love gives you a reason to do just that. They were on fire, almost literally due to 30 degree heat, at SXSW yesterday. With guitar, drums, bass and keys building from a gentle wave to a barrage of sound layered with effects and reverb. It’s a sound that many have made their name with in recent years but the angelic vocals of Yuki Chikudate, some in English, some in Japanese give them an edge over their competitors. They have a bit of an indie dance thing going on too at times which you can’t say of people like Mogwai can you! Their name means Casual Sex in colloquial Japanese by the way.

For Fans Of: Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, School Of Seven Bells.
