Review: Loney Dear, St Giles In The Fields, London Jan 28th 09

Emil Svanagen, main man behind Loney Dear, said during his set last night that he’d never felt it was more true that ‘today is the start of the rest of my life’. Comments like this can’t help to endear the guy to your heart even before you’ve heard him sing a word. Thankfully his vocal chords are also on form this evening and his band are ably there to back up his acoustic guitar and provide some ear bendingly high harmonies.

Loney, Dear entertain fans with numbers from their first four albums as well as treating us to a few new tracks including their latest single, the high paced Swedish pop gem ‘Airport Surroundings’ from the forthcoming ‘Dear John’. Song ‘I am John’ shown above (confusingly not from the Dear John album!) is a crowd favourite and once again essentially a beautiful pop song sung the way only the Swedes can do. The venue tonight is a picturesque church in the middle of Central London which in recent times has seen Bon Iver grace its halls also and as in that performance, tonight the setting seems to help bring out the best in the band. On a couple of occasions Emil steps forward from his microphone and walks within inches of the first row of pews, strumming his guitar and singing freely, his voice echoing around the room. This kind of intimacy is usually rare in a gig of a couple of hundred people but the excellent acoustics make the feat possible.

The band played for just over an hour in total, returning for a one song encore of another favourite ‘The Meter Marks Ok’ complete with ‘la la la’ crowd participation. People are left wanting more but chatting to Emil later he says he always tries to keep it short and sweet. Mission accomplished then.
